Brooklyn Cotton, 17, has found he's made the right choice and is now enjoying an apprenticeship position with PM Training.Like many young people, Brooklyn, started college after leaving school but quickly found it wasn't for him. With a choice to make he found a quick web search provided the answers he was looking for.
He talks to us about his new role and future ambitions.
What did you study after leaving school?
I went to Newcastle-under-Lyme college and studied a BTEC Level 2 in Travel and Tourism. I really liked the idea of it as I loved watching Ibiza Weekender.
In reality though, the course wasn't what I expected at all. There was a lot of theory and writing which put me off quite a bit. I was surprised how much writing there was! I completed the first year but I didn't go back after that.
How did you find out about PM Training?
I really wanted to try something different after college, something that was more hands-on.
The staff were really friendly and I got a chance to have a look around and meet the team.
Tell us about your journey at PM Training?
I started with PM Training and went straight onto the Officeworks pre-apprenticeship programme. I got the chance to learn about the key skills needed for the workplace alongside business administration and how to progress successfully in an office-based role. I really enjoyed it.
It taught me a lot about how to build my confidence and the staff were really supportive. I was always kept up to date on the latest apprenticeship vacancies that came up.
Can you tell us about the position you are in now?
I really enjoy it, my daily duties are things like answering the phones, updating spreadsheets and general admin duties. Of course, I have to make the team a good brew too!
Has an apprenticeship helped your career journey?
Massively! I really enjoy working here. I'm actually getting experience on the job and earning a wage which is great. I couldn't ask for better staff to work with, everyone is really friendly and welcoming. They want you to do well.
What about your future plans?
I really want to stay here with PM Training and work my way up. I would love to be able to build my career here, it's been the best thing I ever did.
What would you say to school leavers who are unsure of what to do next?
I would 100% recommend PM Training. I am so glad I came here. I am doing something that I want to do and I don't have to write essays and research theory.
The best of it is, I'm working towards a qualification and getting paid at the same time. The Open Days are a great way to have a look around and ask questions.
Many young people are pressured to go to college or often follow the footsteps of friends. I would just say make sure you are making a decision that suits you and not other people.
